Hakaba Kitarou (Graveyard Kitaro)
Sinopsis
“Before Shigeru Mizuki rehabilitated him as Gegege no Kitaro (Spooky Kitaro), the virtuous, kid-friendly superhero beloved by anime and manga fans, the little one-eyed yokai with the magical striped vest was known as Hakaba Kitaro (Graveyard Kitaro), and he and his world had much more in common with "Tales from the Crypt" than "Astro Boy." This eleven-part miniseries very pleasingly captures this seedier and scarier Kitaro depicted in Mizuki's earlier versions of the character. It appears to be set in the early 1960s (the 1964 Tokyo Olympics are referenced) and uses a faded, yellowish color palette, perhaps a reference to old sepia photographs or the foxed pages of old comic books. Weaving together several story lines from 1960s vintage Hakaba Kitaro into a nicely structured narrative, this series does an excellent job of evoking both the look and pacing of Mizuki's work from this period.”
